UCLA Summer Dance Theatre Intensive
Kevin Kane directs a unique eight-day intensive for advanced high school students from all over the United States. Mixing the disciplines of dance, theater, music, and social activism, the program is geared towards those students who are interested in exploring how the arts can be used to investigate individual and group identity, as well as raise awareness and consciousness regarding a variety of socially relevant themes. The intensive features instruction by current UCLA WAC departmental dance and cultural studies faculty, and includes daily movement classes ranging from postmodern dance to hip-hop, several world dance forms, ensemble physical theater classes, as well as improvisation and composition that explore issues of identity, social justice, and arts and civic engagement. In the past, faculty members have included: Jackie Lopez, Keali'i Ceballos, Nehara Kalev, Derrick Jones, Carolina San Juan, Sheethal Gandhi, and Olivier Tarpaga. UCLA undergraduates, who work tirelessly as program counselors, have included such students as: Tittus Mendez, Mo Marmesh, Diane Palaganas, Harry Weston, Russell Angelico, Ashley Cartwright, Marina Magalhaes, and Leanne Iacovetta. The program guides students as they investigate their roles as young artists through special sessions devoted to the idea of art as social action. Students are engaged in a collaborative theater-making process that includes both dancing and acting and participate in intense social bonding that results in lifelong friendships and collaborations. Most leave the program changed for the better, with a vision of how the arts can make a positive impact in society. The folowing links take you to these shows.
